What's the real difference between a shaken or stirred martini? Stirring may be the best method for martini veterans who like a stronger drink. Shaking a martini melts more ice into the alcohol, creating a weaker drink.
However, don't let that stop you from using the shaking method. Shaking a martini (or any cocktail for that matter) will help get the drink colder more quickly, and cold is good when it comes to cocktails. And if you're going for effect, nothing says cool like a bartender who uses the shaking method to blend liquids.
Furthermore, if you're using clear or light liquids in your martini, shaking can produce a "snowflake" effect (from tiny broken ice chips suspended in the alcohol) which will last at least for a moment after you pour your drink. So go ahead and shake your martini. If it's good enough for 007, it's good enough for you.
While you're pondering the stirring/shaking question, take a look at some of the following martini glasses which range from classic to modern designs.
